What Is Gum Line Contouring?

Gum line contouring is a procedure intended to reshape, re-contour, expand, or reduce a patient’s gum tissues, particularly along the gum line. This procedure can be performed either with a laser (which is what we use in our office) or a scalpel.

When surgery is performed to remove dead or diseased gum tissue, this procedure is called a gingivectomy. When surgery is performed to reshape the gum line for cosmetic purposes, the procedure is referred to as a gingivoplasty. Both types of procedures are commonly performed at the same time.

What to Expect During a Gum Line Contouring Procedure

A gum line contouring procedure is fairly simple and less invasive since we use a laser, rather than a scalpel to perform the surgery. The appointment begins with the administration of a local anesthetic to ensure the patient experiences no pain or discomfort during the procedure.
Recovery following oral laser surgery is minimal. However, we will provide you with some aftercare instructions to minimize recovery symptoms and potential complications while accelerating your recovery time.
