First Date with Your Dazzling Smile? What to Expect During Your First Dental Visit

Our dentists and hygienists can’t wait to meet you, but we understand that a first time dental appointment with a new dentist and hygienist can sometimes cause some anxiety. Knowing what to expect during your first appointment, however, will set your mind at ease, as you take this first step in getting to know the best version of your brilliant smile.

Comprehensive Dental Examination

During a your first appointment, our dentist will thoroughly examine your teeth, gums and mouth, looking for signs of potential concerns such as tooth decay, gingivitis or periodontal (gum) disease. Our dentist might also gently palpate your neck and jaw, feeling for abnormalities. The dentist will also ask you about any symptoms you have experienced, such as sensitivity, toothaches or sleep apnea.

X-Rays

If we have not received recent dental records from another dental office, your first examination will also likely include bitewing x-rays. These images reveal much more about your oral health than our dentist can see on the surface, including signs of:
If your x-rays or examination reveal any concerns, our dentist will discuss further treatment options with you.

Cleaning

Recommended every six to twelve months, a comprehensive dental exam also includes a dental cleaning. During your cleaning, one of our hygienists will gently scale (remove) accumulated plaque and tartar from your teeth. Our hygienist will then polish each of your teeth, using a special polishing paste to remove surface stains. Following a quick rinse, your teeth will feel perfectly smooth and appear much brighter.
